Secondary schools art ready for judging and auction

This year’s entries in the secondary school art competition for the Waikato / Coromandel are being exhibited in readiness for auction and judging.

The competition, which is being supported by Hamilton City Council, Creative Waikato and sponsored by Paterson Burn Optometrists, is being held for the second year.

There are 67 entries in this year’s awards three more than last year. The artwork is currently being exhibited on-line at www.patersonburn.co.nz/artwork and also in Paterson Burn branches throughout the region before being shown at the Creative Waikato gallery in Alexandra Street in Hamilton city.

Two thousand dollars in cash prizes is being offered as part of the 2014 Excellence in Art Competition. Prize money is split between winning artists and their schools.

This year’s judges are Leafa Wilson, art curator from Waikato Museum; Dr Carole
Shepheard, Waikato resident artist and former Professor of Fine Arts at the niversity of

Auckland; and full-time artist Santie Cronje from Cambridge.

Students will again have the opportunity to sell their artworks in the on-line auction. They

will receive 80 per cent of the proceeds with 20 per cent being donated to Diabetes New Zealand. Some of the artists have decided not to make their work available for sale.

The winners of the Excellence in Art Competition will be announced at an awards
presentation on Thursday 8 May.

Senior Paterson Burn Optometrists partner Adrian Paterson says artwork this year is very impressive.

“The judges will undoubtedly have a tough job ahead of them in. We are particularly pleased to see the momentum that the Awards are now creating and the fact there is now a regular outlet for our region’s emerging artistic talent,” he says.
