Tsunami threat cancelled for New Zealand coastal areas
The Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management (MCDEM) has cancelled a potential Tsunami threat for New Zealand coastal areas, and there is no threat to Christchurch or Banks Peninsula.
The tsunami experts panel (TEP) are advising that there is not likely to be a tsunami threat for New Zealand following a magnitude 7.6 earthquake this morning off the coast of the Solomon Islands.
Some caution will still have to be given regarding potentially strong, unpredictable currents around coastal areas of New Zealand. This includes areas around the northwest part of the North Island, and based on past experience along the west coast of the South Island (e.g. Greymouth, Westport).
The National Crisis Management Centre (NCMC) is standing down from 10.30am.
