Wellington
Police have released CCTV footage which shows a person of interest they wish to speak to in relation to the Kiwi Self Storage arson investigation.
They are carrying a 25 litre red tote tank and wearing a white t-shirt over a black hooded sweatshirt, dark pants and a white cap with the words 'Vodka Cruiser' on it.
A scene examination has been completed and Police can confirm the seat of the fire was in a single unit and it appears an explosion has taken place. Samples from the scene have been sent for forensic testing for any accelerant that may have been used.
There is extensive fire damage to the top floor of the building with more moderate water and smoke damage to ground floor units.
Detective Senior Sergeant Grant Ferguson says "We now believe that his was a malicious, deliberate and pre-planned arson. The occupier of the unit where the blaze started is assisting Police with our inquiries but we need the public's assistance to help identify the person shown."
"The scene examination has revealed that an explosion has occurred but we are awaiting forensic results to determine if the explosion caused the fire or the other way around."
"The fire has affected a large number of people who have lost many items valuable to them and we encourage them to contact us using the email address."
Police are encouraging people wishing to register their loss and be kept up to date on progress to email kiwistoragefire@police.govt.nz.
Police are continuing to appeal for any sightings of anyone acting suspiciously in the area at around 12.45am on Friday 4 April to contact Police. Anyone with any information should contact Wellington Police on (04) 381 2000. Information can also be provided anonymously by contacting the Crimestoppers organisation on 0800 555 111.
