State Highway 3 update
Following last week's fatal rock fall on SH3, the NZ Transport Agency has received an update from its geotechnical specialists regarding the progress of their mitigation works and cliff face assessment.
Transport Agency Regional Director Harry Wilson says work has begun on rock scaling (small rock removal) of the cliff face, and will continue in parallel with the wider safety assessment of the corridor which is now underway.
Mr Wilson says a detailed report from the geotechnical specialists is expected to be received in the next two weeks, which will also identify if any further remedial work is required to re-open the road to two lanes.
In the interim this section of road will remain open to a single lane under traffic management. A concrete barrier is still in place to provide protection for road users travelling through the site.
Mr Wilson said the Transport Agency thanked drivers for their patience while this work is being undertaken.
