Rafts, Scooters and Pooches set to take over Kawerau

Rafts, Scooters and Pooches will take over Kawerau this weekend.

On Saturday (5th April) organisers from Rafting Adventure, New Zealand will once again take to the Tarawera River rapids in what is the 10th Seriously Social Rafting Comp. The event is open to anyone keen to give competitive rafting a try and continues to encourage participation in the sport.

After reaching the 16 team limit a week out from the event, team spots have been increased to allow for an additional 4 teams to enter. This is the last major whitewater event this summer season in Kawerau.

With the competitions inception back in 2010, raft enthusiasts from 13-70 years of age have joined in the fun at the World famous venue in Kawerau.
After the dizzy heights of the World Rafting Champs back in November 2013, that saw a vibrant mix and colour of nationalities from all continents on the globe, this week’s social comp. will offer time trials and head 2 heads in a less formal and fun focussed format.

Teams will come as far afield as Auckland and will boast interesting names such as the Double Boogies, Sunshine Superstars and River Dogs, with the Hydraulic Damsels sure favourites for the best team name title.

The newly created river walkway (finalist in the 2014 NZ Wood Timber Awards) is just perfect for viewing the rafting and other whitewater activities, whilst the Waterhouse Street Reserve lends itself nicely for a picnic and walk amongst the trees.

Additionally to rafting, elsewhere in Kawerau a full event weekend is planned with Dog Agility Champs at Prideaux Park (all weekend) with competitors travelling from all over the North Island and the Kawerau Youth Council ‘Skate Park Jam’ also taking place on Saturday, showcasing a pro. Skate team from Auckland and offering local scooterists and skaters an opportunity to win top prizes.

Kawerau District Council Head of community events and activities, Lee Barton said “There literally is something for everyone for the first month of April in Kawerau and after the community organised and celebrated the towns 60thBirthday last week, everyone can once again enjoy another energetic weekend of activities in the township.”
