Huka Lodge not sold, sorry April Fool’s joke says councillor

Auckland Councillor Cameron Brewer has unreservedly apologised for posting an April Fool’s Day joke on his Facebook page claiming he’d met this morning (April 1) with some new owners of the exclusive Taupo lodge which was completely untrue and based on no substance whatsoever.

He has personally apologised on the phone to Huka Lodge General Manager Kerry Molloy this afternoon, and promised to make a public correction.

Mr Brewer posted on his Faceback page a photo of himself with some Chinese businessmen taken some time ago who were merely guests at Huka Lodge. They requested to meet with Mr Brewer who was in Taupo at the time staying with family over a holiday period. The topic of discussion was investment opportunities in Auckland.

Mr Brewer this morning posted the photo and comments: ‘Great to meet the new international owners of Huka Lodge in Taupo this morning. Wonderful Chinese businessmen who have big redevelopment plans for Huka Lodge, including a Kiwiana theme park and apartments.”

This afternoon he completely retracted his statements are completely untrue and says no malice was intended. He says this morning he was at council.

“It was an April Fool’s Day joke. I’m really sorry if this has put the cat among the pigeons again following Winston Peter’s silly claims a while back. Huka Lodge was on the phone within 30 minutes of me posting the ridiculous claims. They made it clear to me, as they did to media in February, that they are not for sale and have no intention to sell,” says Cameron Brewer.
