This international 'Fossil Fools Day' members of the Save Happy Valley Campaign are calling for one way tickets to Mars
for attendees at the Petroleum and Minerals Summit in Wellington today.
The Save Happy Valley campaign began in 2004 to stop state-owned enterprise Solid Energy's proposed open-cast coal mine
in the rare kiwi breeding ground of the Waimangaroa valley near Westport. For over three years hundreds of people
occupied the mountainous Happy Valley 'Cypress mine' site, bringing attention to the disaster that is 21st century coal
mining.
Last year after serious financial mismanagement, Solid Energy's CEO Don Elder resigned. This year, without a CEO and
with major debt problems and the lowest coal price in nine years, Solid Energy went ahead and started mining Happy
Valley at a loss anyway.
"It is truly astounding that these old fossil fools are still out there wheeling and dealing our precious finite
resources away like a planet B has been found already. It's time corporations and governments who can't manage their own
account balances and can only see this planet for it's worth on the stock market, bugger off to Mars and don't come
back. For those of us who know there's only one planet so far in the universe that we can live on, we will keep fighting
to protect this one." said spokesperson Pauli Fantar.
