Council adopts cycleway route names
Riders pedalling along the city’s new Major Cycleway routes will be able to navigate their way along the Papanui
Parallel, Wheels to Wings, Quarryman’s Trail or Nor’West Arc.
They are among names the Council adopted today for the 13 routes to be built in the city. Councillors endorsed a
recommendation by the Environmental Committee to approve names based on a public vote. Councillors agreed that bilingual
options provided by Ngāi Tahu will also be used. See the table below for the full list of route names.
“This is an exciting project for the city and that is reflected in the way people responded to the contest,” says
Environmental Committee Chair Phil Clearwater. “Council is pleased that the people who will use the routes are the ones
who have helped name them by suggesting names and then voting on options.”
The contest attracted more than 220 name suggestions and 1200 votes were cast in an online poll from 1-15 February. The
person credited with nominating the winning name for each route wins a bike and helmet package. Council staff will
finalise plans for an event to present prizes to winners now the final names are known.
“The contest ran with the tag line ‘We’re on our Way’ and provided a great way for people to get involved in the Major
Cycleways while staff got on with the important work of developing priority criteria and detailed designs for the
routes.
“Staff are beginning consultation on some routes and we really are on our way with work on the Major Cycleways likely to
begin later this year in parts of the city,” Cr Clearwater says.
“This includes new signal-controlled crossings for pedestrians and riders at the city end of the Northern Line Cycleway
on Deans Avenue, the section of the Papanui Parallel in Rutland Reserve and Uni-Cycle, the route linking Canterbury
University and College of Education with the Central City.”
