More Pipelines Being Replaced in Central City
Dunedin, 20 March 2014 – New pipelines will be laid in the Queens Gardens area over the next few months as part of a
continuing upgrade programme.
The work begins on Sunday night and will continue through to July. Rattray Street, between Princes Street and Queens
Gardens, will be closed at times so new stormwater and wastewater pipelines can be installed through the intersection of
Rattray and Crawford Streets. This will happen at night and the road will be open between 7am and 6pm.
Dunedin City Council Water and Waste Services Asset and Commercial Manager (acting) Tom Osborn says, “The Crawford
Street work is being carried out as the existing stormwater and wastewater pipes are more than 100 years old and are in
poor condition and struggling to meet the desired level of service.
“The existing stormwater pipeline is also under capacity and a bigger pipeline will be installed to take the flow and
improve some localised flooding issues.”
The work is part of a contract to renew and upgrade pipelines in the Crawford Street/Warehouse Precinct area. Work
started on Vogel Street after Christmas, proceeded to Water Street and now moves to the state highway.
The work will start in Queens Gardens outside Harcourts and move back along Crawford Street as far as Jetty Street. The
work will usually, but not always, take place in the left hand/left turn traffic lane. This means it is to the left of
the cycle lane and out of the main traffic flow.
Some of the work will be carried out close to trees and specialist DCC staff have been closely involved and will provide
supervision where necessary.
The value of the overall contract for pipeline work in the Crawford Street/Warehouse Precinct area is $968,000. The work
is being carried out by Downer Ltd.
