Major Earthquake Engineering Conference In Auckland This Weekend
This weekend, the NZ Society for Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE) will host more than 350 engineers, scientists, policy makers, insurers and other earthquake engineering professionals at it’s annual three day technical conference in the Aotea Centre, Auckland.
This year’s the conference theme, “Towards integrated seismic design”, aims to encourage cross-disciplinary interaction and cooperation. Keynote presentations will be given by, • Robert Reitherman - Executive Director of the Consortium of Universities for Research in Earthquake Engineering (CUREE), an association of 22 American universities with civil engineering programs devoted to earthquake engineering.
• Dr. David Wald - Seismologist with the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in Golden,
Colorado and Geophysics Faculty at the Colorado School of Mines.
• Prof. Michael Pender – Professor of Geotechnical Engineering at The University of
Auckland and visiting professor at the European School for Advanced Studies in the
Reduction of Seismic Risk, University of Pavia.
On top of the keynote presentations and the over 80 other oral presentations, there will be a
number of invited presentations by distinguished speakers, namely,
• Prof. Jonathan Bray - Faculty Chair in Earthquake Engineering Excellence, University
of California, Berkeley, U.S.A.
• Dr. Dave Gitting – Acting manager of consent system at the Ministry of Business,
Innovation and Employment (MBIE)
• Jimmy Higgins – Executive General Manager of Earthquake Programme, Vero NZ.
• Prof. Jason Ingham – Professor of Structural Engineering, The University of Auckland.
• Dr. Jan Linsay – Senior Lecturer in the School of Environment, The University of
Auckland and co-principal investigator of the Determining Volcanic Risk in Auckland
(DEVORA) project.
• Mark Tamura – Team leader in the Auckland Council’s planning division.
• Prof. John W. Van der Lindt - George T. Abell Distinguished Professor of Infrastructure
in Structural Engineering at Colorado State University.
The NZSEE acknowledges Auckland Council and the Earthquake Commission as conference
