SDC CEO appointed to key rebuild and recovery role

Tuesday 18 March 2014

Southland District Council CEO appointed to key rebuild and recovery role at Christchurch City Council

Southland District Council Chief Executive David Adamson has been appointed as the Christchurch City Council's Director of Facilities and Infrastructure Rebuild.

This new role at the Council will involve the rebuild of Council Facilities, the city led Anchor projects, other rebuild programmes, and our horizontal infrastructure rebuild including SCIRT. It is part of the new Executive Leadership Team.

Christchurch City Council Acting Chief Executive Jane Parfitt says the Council was extremely fortunate that someone of David's calibre was joining the Council where he will be leading a key area of the city's rebuild and recovery

David has been the Chief Executive of the Southland District Council since 2004. He originally joined the organisation 19 years ago as the District Engineer. He was then appointed as the Group Manager for Services and Assets before becoming the Chief Executive.

As one of the local government sector's most respected and experienced professional engineers, his career has included engineering positions at the Rotorua District Council, the Taupo County Council and the New Plymouth City Council.

Jane Parfitt says the new director's position attracted a large number of applications from both within New Zealand and also overseas, with many, like Mr Adamson, indicating they want to play a role in the rebuild and recovery of the city.

David Adamson says it was not an easy decision to leave his current role as a Chief Executive, but "when an opportunity like this presented itself I had to take it. I am ready for a new challenge and feel like I am going back to my engineering roots."

In announcing David's resignation, Southland Mayor Gary Tong said that David had dedicated himself to the Southland District Council. "Council's operations are very well respected by Local Government New Zealand and Council is in a very good financial position. This comes from having the right people at the top."

He will start at the Christchurch City Council in June.

Other Executive Leadership Team positions at the Council were expected to be announced this week, Jane Parfitt says.
