Church land may become part of Havelock North Domain
A parcel of land, currently owned by St Columba’s Presbyterian Church could become part of an extension to the Havelock
North Domain.
Councillor Wayne Bradshaw says” During discussion with Council officers on the Havelock North Domain Reserve Management
plan, an opportunity was identified that had the potential to further integrate the church and the domain into the
surrounding area. A proposal was developed to purchase a 1724m2 parcel of land, located adjacent to the domain,
following the demolition of the church hall.”
Wayne Bradshaw says “Once the opportunity to purchase the land was identified, it was a matter of talking with the
church in an effort to find some common ground where both parties objectives could be met. From Council’s perspective,
it was imperative that the land was maintained in public ownership and it offered a chance to improve the connectivity
between the domain and the village centre. This would be a very big step in future proofing this area as a public
space.”
Mr Bradshaw says “This is an exciting development that has the potential to provide improved recreational opportunities
for the community and ticks all the boxes. New parking will be created as part of this project and that could become a
valuable addition for shoppers and churchgoers alike.”
“This proposal has developed from a strong partnership between Council, the Church and the community and would ensure
that the land is protected for public use in perpetuity,” Wayne Bradshaw says.
The Council’s proposal to purchase of the land will be consulted through the 2014/15 annual plan process. You are
