Waikato Civil Defence Tracking Lusi Closely
Waikato Civil Defence Emergency Management Group controller Lee Hazlewood says the organisation is geared up to respond as required if Cyclone Lusi leads to problems in the region this weekend.
“Staff at the Group Emergency Management Office in Hamilton are tracking the situation closely and we will provide any civil defence advice and services that the situation warrants.
“Civil defence personnel in other parts of the region are also monitoring developments closely.”
Cyclone Lusi is currently expected to move from the north of the country and on to New Zealand during the weekend.
Heavy rain and strong winds are expected across the Waikato region, particularly eastern areas such as the Coromandel Peninsula. Heavy seas are also expected along the east coast.
“It’s important for the public to stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts and be aware of potential impacts, such as river and coastal flooding, slips, road closures, power failures and phone outages,” said Mr Hazlewood.
