Six charity projects acknowledged by Christchurch Airport
Small change has added up to make a big difference to six charities.
Christchurch Airport today gave six charities $2000 each from the Christchurch Airport Community Fund, collected from
donation boxes through the terminal building and a donation from the airport company.
Chief Executive Malcolm Johns presented the cheques to representatives of AllRight?, Aviva, Arthritis New Zealand,
Canterbury West Coast Air Rescue Trust, St John South Island region and The Rotary Club of Avonhead.
“We hail you as heroes, for all you do for the communities of Christchurch, Canterbury and the South Island,” Mr Johns
told the group. “Every one of you is doing a vital job of supporting communities, whether they need you every day, some
days, or only when they’re in dire need. We are pleased to offer some financial support to you as you continue to play
your part in the fabric of the South Island.”
Mr Johns told recipients arriving international passengers sometimes deposit currency from their last stop, or people
departing internationally donate the last of their Kiwi dollars. He said the record number of currencies gathered at
once is 14. Airport staff also observe donations from locals who contribute change from their coffee or meal in the
terminal.
The money is regularly collected, converted and then topped up by a donation from the airport company. Charities can
apply for funds to support an identified project and cheques are presented once or twice a year.
