Council weather update: 5.30pm
Residents from 20 households in Brittan Terrace and part of Park Road in Lyttelton have been evacuated due to damage to
a fuel storage tank.
Brittan Terrace and Park Road have been closed. People who live in these locations are advised to go to Lyttelton
Service Centre at 15 London Street. It has been set up as an emergency reception area where people can drop in with
questions and requests for assistance. The community is running the centre and helping to assess housing needs and
direct people where to go.
People who normally pass through the affected area to get home or live west of Lyttelton are advised to use the
alternative route via Cressy Terrace. It should be noted this is for light vehicles only. An alternative route if via
State Highway 75 and Gebbies Pass.
Some residents on Canterbury Street, Lyttelton, have chosen to evacuate their properties after a retaining wall suffered
damage. A section of Canterbury Street from Ripon Street to Somes Road is closed to traffic until further notice.
It is anticipated that Dyers Pass Road will be reopened for light traffic early this evening.
Geotechnical staff are in the area and Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team are helping. These experts will
continue to monitor any potential land slip hazards.
Electricity has been restored to Akaroa and Orion is working to restore supply to other affected areas.
Staff have been going door-to-door in Riverlaw Terrace area in Woolston to check on the welfare of residents.
Police will be on roads during the anticipated busy period up to 6pm. Drivers are urged to use caution while travelling.
People coming home from work and discovering damage should try to contact their insurer. They are reminded to check that
neighbours, friends and family are okay. For emergency situations, dial 111.
Council waterways contractors will be on call overnight.
Water tankers are on standby to deliver fresh supplies to Banks Peninsula tomorrow if needed.
Council warns that floodwaters are likely to be contaminated and people should avoid contact. Anyone who comes into
contact with contaminated water should wash their hands and remove and wash any clothing that gets wet.
Kerbside collection
There are a number of streets where kerbside collection has not been completed. Collections will be done in the
following streets tomorrow:
Owles Tce, New Brighton, Pages Rd to Harvey St (green waste)
Julis Tce, Shirley (recycling)
Draper St, Avonside (Recycle only)
Pream and Allison Pl, Shirley (Recycle only )
Emmett St, Shirley (Recycling, from Riselaw St to Shirley Rd)
Slater St, Shirley (recycling/organic (from Shirley Rd to Warden St).
An assessment will be done early on Friday as to whether collections in the Residential Red Zone will take place that
day. It is unlikely Avonside collections will happen this week.
Council facilities
Okains Bay Campground: Closed
Okains Bay Campground is currently without power, partly flooded and has a number of fallen trees and branches. Staff
are on site and will reopen the camp when power is resorted, conditions improve and fallen trees to be removed.
Rawhiti Golf Course: Closed
A number of trees have fallen at the course. The course has moderate surface flooding and will remain closed for the
next two days. Friday's golf tournament has been cancelled.
A decision whether to open for the weekend will depend how long it takes for ground to dry and fallen trees to be
removed.
South Brighton Campground: Limited service available,
South Brighton Campground has suffered significant surface flooding, which has affected the entire campground.
Campground managers are on site and have relocated campers, some services will remain closed until conditions improve.
South Brighton Reserve
People are asked to stay away from the area as there is a danger loose branches could fall.
Welfare Centre
The Council’s Welfare Centre at Mairehau High School, 440 Hills Road, is to stay open until 7pm. An assessment will be
done on the need for it and if it no linger required it will close at 8pm.
The same situation applies for the centre at Woolston Primary School.
