Lyttelton Port bulk fuel incident being monitored
The Lyttelton Volunteer Fire Brigade will maintain a watch overnight at the Port following damage to a bulk fuel storage tank caused by a collapsed cliff face.
There is no risk to the public at this point and the aviation fuel that is leaking from the tank is being safely managed and contained by the Fire Service, port authorities and fuel companies.
There is a strong smell of petroleum in the area and while the fumes may be dispersed by the wind, the smell could linger for some time.
Christchurch Police and City Council engineers will provide any updates on the damage to the hillside and affected streets or homes.
There will be no further updates from the Fire Service tonight unless there is a significant change in the situation.
