Museum suffers water damage
Canterbury Museum has suffered water damage throughout its galleries and storage areas caused by the region’s torrential
rain.
Museum Director Anthony Wright says museum staff were deployed this morning to clean up more than 20 areas throughout
the Museum and the Robert McDougall Gallery that had suffered water leaks.
“The situation was pretty dire this morning. We moved objects away from flooded areas, but disappointingly, a
significant artwork in our RISE exhibition has been damaged – an area of Thom Buchanan’s painted street scene has come away from the wall due to water
leaking through from internal guttering above,” he says.
“We’ve used everything we can to contain the water, from barrels and buckets through to towels, and we’ve managed to
keep our treasured collections out of harm’s way.”
The Museum opened to the public on time and staff were on alert for further leaks.
