Language School sausage sizzle benefits Variety
Mount Maunganui Language Centre students held a sausage sizzle to raise funds for Variety – The Children’s Charity, which benefits sick, disabled or disadvantaged kids in need of a helping hand.
The Centre’s director, Geoff Butler, is part of a fund-raising team that takes part in the annual Variety Trillian Bash, a classic road rally which delivers grants to kids along its route.
A class with students from Chile, Japan, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Thailand and Turkey were working on the topic of advertising for the week. “They wanted to run an event which they would have to promote to the rest of the school,” Geoff says. “I told them about Variety and the upcoming Bash, so they decided the event would be a sausage sizzle to raise money for it.”
The sizzle was held on school premises after a one-week promotion; “They raised $226 from selling 80 sausages,” though “Quite a few students paid more than the suggested donation of $2.”
“ I thought it's pretty unique to have international visitors to New Zealand get stuck in and run a fundraiser for Kiwi kids,” says Geoff, who part owns the ‘Every Little Boys Dream’ team’s fire engine that will travel from Auckland to Waitomo, Rotorua, Gisborne, the east cape and Tauranga come March, delivering grants and lighthearted petrolhead fun to backblocks kids from March 16.
