Hastings Youth Councillors appointed
Young people from all around Hastings District have shown strong interest in becoming part of the Local Government
decision making process.
27 nominations were received for 15 positions on the Hastings District Council Youth Council. The new Councillors will
have the chance to gain a perspective on issues that affect the district and will be encouraged to become involved in
planning and developing Council services. Councillors will also ensure that the views of young people are canvassed and
passed on to the full Council.
The 2014 Hastings District Council Youth Councillors are:

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says “I am delighted at the interest shown by young people from all around the district in
becoming a Youth Councillor. It can be a very rewarding time for these young people and I have seen members of previous
Youth Councils grow, and gain a greater appreciation of the challenges of being involved in political life.”
Lawrence Yule says “This year’s group of young people come from varied backgrounds and represent all parts of the
district but they have one thing in common; they have shown a great desire to be involved in the decision making
process. The calibre of the Youth Councillors is high and I applaud them for their desire to become involved in Local
Government politics at a young age.”
Youth Councillors will attend monthly or fortnightly meetings, help organise the Youth Potential awards, be a part of
events that have been confirmed by the Youth Council and attend an overnight retreat.
