Strengthen family ties this Children’s Day

Strengthen family ties this Children’s Day

There are lots of ways to celebrate Children’s Day this Sunday, and the Chief Families Commissioner Belinda Milnes suggests families might consider starting a new family tradition to mark the importance of New Zealand’s children.

“There are a lot of great fun events on around the country to celebrate our children, and I’ll certainly be attending the Masterton SPCA event with my children.”

“Another way is to do something special as a family that helps builds long-lasting bonds, such as starting a tradition your family can repeat every year as the kids grow older.”

Ms Milnes says family traditions can be as simple as having a special meal together, holding a family music night, or going for a moonlight walk.

“In my family we already have a few special rituals like a secret handshake and family hugs that even include the dog!”

“All parents know that children grow up all too fast and taking time to create special family memories doesn’t cost anything, and can be something children remember for years.

“As a community we can take small steps to make a difference to all children.  As Celia Lashlie says, it can be as simple as smiling at a child or saying hello to make them feel valued.”
