Local community groups stand to benefit from about $25,000 in donations in exchange for work at next weekend’s Wanaka A&P Show.

Show owners, the not-for-profit Upper Clutha A&P Society, utilise local groups like the Wanaka Squash Club, Wanaka Rowing Club, the Mt Aspiring College 1st XV team, the Wanaka Fire Brigade, Upper Clutha Lions, Upper Clutha Plunket, Wanaka Yacht and Power Boat Club and Wanaka Cub Scouts to assist with the smooth operation of the Show, held on March 7-8 this year.

All groups receive a contribution to their funds in exchange for work. Jobs include manning the gates, catering for Show functions, operating the bar and cleaning up the Showgrounds after the event.

“It’s vital for the smooth running of the Wanaka A&P Show that we enlist the help of local community groups and organisations,” Show Coordinator Jane Stalker says.

“In acknowledgement of that, and in return for their help and effort over the two days, we are more than happy to give these groups donations to their cause. It’s important for us to give back to the community that supports us. It’s a win-win.”

The Wanaka Squash Club has been manning the gates and collecting money from Show visitors for several years. It’s a big job and requires about 90 volunteers over the two days, club president Jeff Limmer says.

“It’s our only fundraiser of the year so it’s very important for us. We hope to build more squash courts and upgrade the facilities, so this fundraiser will go towards that,” Limmer says.

The Wanaka Squash Club splits the job with the Mt Aspiring College 1st XV rugby team this year.

The Wanaka A&P Show also gives free sites to a select number of registered charitable organisations as part of its support, including Wanaka Preschool, Wanaka Toy Library, #GigatownWanaka, Upper Clutha Plunket, Dr Compost, Dyslexia-help4u, Friends of Wanaka Animal Shelter and the Cancer Society.
