Enjoy the Last Blast of Summer at Silo Park for the Month of March
Make the most of March at Silo Park with great films presented by Silo Cinema, a selection of acclaimed DJs and bands at
Silo Sessions and free dance lessons every Sunday at Silo Social.
It’s been the biggest and best summer season yet down at Silo Park, thanks to the support of Aucklanders and visitors to
the city alike. The fun is far from over with our March programme, whether you’re out for a day with the family or after
work with your mates.
Between the Friday night Silo Cinema, a soul-infused line up (featuring Lord Echo, Ria Hall and more) for our Silo
Sessions on 28th March, and free weekly dance lessons with Silo Social, Auckland waterfront has something for everyone
as the last hot rays of summer beam down on Silo Park.
Silo Cinema presents a fresh and varied array of films every Friday night for the month of March -- the perfect way to
wind up (or down) the week -- an accessible and relaxed free summer activity on Auckland’s thriving waterfront.
The month kicks off with The Royal Tenenbaums (in conjunction with Heart of the City’s 10 Days of Fashion in the City)
on 7th March, and follows on with the stunning Italian drama Life is Beautiful directed by and starring Roberto Benigni
on 14th March. Things lighten up later in the month with cult comedy classic Wayne’s World starring Mike Myers.
Our special Silo Cinema screening of city-living documentary The Human Scale and an accompanying Pecha Kucha
presentation was rained out earlier in the season, but come 28th March its back for a second ever-so sunny helping due
to popular demand. The Pecha Kucha talks (a quick presentation style involving several speakers making quick summaries
of their topics) feature a range of informed and engaging speakers from a variety of backgrounds. As follows: Dr.
Stephen Rainbow; General Manager Strategy Waterfront Auckland, on great design, sustainability and commercial
development; James Samuel of Food Forest NZ on urban food: creative and fun; Andy Smith, Sky Path trustee; on the
SkyPath and the plan to transform Auckland into a cycle-friendly, walkable city; Alastair Jamieson, ecologist and
photographer on the volcanoes in our backyard; and finally Julie Anne Genter, transport planner and Green MP on
improving the user-friendliness of Auckland. This is a rare educational event bound to challenge and inspire families
and friends alike.
Silo Sessions is very proud to present a live set from esteemed eccentric producer Lord Echo on 29th March. With a
penchant for heavy rhythms moving through a fresh fusion of soul-reggae, afro-disco, latin-boogie and more, Lord Echo
has been blowing stereos and minds internationally with the release of his LP ‘Curiosities’. He is joined by the
astounding young talent that is soul/R’n’B singer Ria Hall as well as international soul sensations Electric Wire Hustle
Sound System. The show will also feature DJ sets from Isaac Aesili, Lord Echo, Mara TK and Taay Ninh. With special
thanks to the respected Mike Fabulous for curating this incredible talent for the final hoorah in Silo Park.
Come down for a brew, a browse of the Silo Markets and a boogie in the sunshine on the last Saturday of summer.
Every Sunday this Silo Park season, join the people of your community in a fun and engaging afternoon dance class. Learn
from the very best dance academies in Auckland, who will offer their services free of charge and have you dancing at the
Silo Social on Sunday afternoons. The Silo Social March 2014 programme includes a range of fun a line dancing and two
surprise dance classes -- watch this space!
Silo Social will be the best send-off to the weekend as you sip an interesting wine or craft beer from the Silo bar,
peruse the hidden retail treasures of Silo Markets and grab a bite from the on-site street food vendors before taking to
the dance floor to learn a step or two.
A popular format internationally and in other parts of New Zealand, free public dance classes have now arrived in one of
Auckland's favourite venues. The Silo Markets are on each Sunday from 12pm to 6pm and Silo Social will kick off at 3pm
to 6pm.
So whether it be a casual Friday movie, a Saturday at the Silo Markets grooving to live local waterfront jams, or a fun
upskilling Sunday spent learning a new trick or two for the dancefloor -- there’s something for you, your family and
friends at Silo Park this summer -- jump on board this March while the sun’s high in the sky.
