Steve recently moved back to Wellington but undertook this research project of Regents Canal whilst studying his Masters degree at Goldsmith University in London. Interested in the social application of photography and inspired by the fascinating history of Regents Canal Steve has set out in this series of images to represent varied specific details along Regents Canal in an attempt to explore and apply a new form of socio-economic value.

In order to do so the photographs are based around the canals multi-faceted and unique histories, habitats, current social uses and surprising mishaps. By exploring the dialogue between industrial ingenuity and inevitably the consequences of such, we begin to understand the complexity involved in undertaking this task.

These images do not claim to answer how best, if at all, to ‘re-mould’ the Regents Canal rather they present us with a personal visual journey along it. As opposed to fleeting glances during a brisk stroll or cycle ride on the towpath, we find ourselves affording the time to spend to contemplate the space evoked within the frame and the place, of which it represents. In this sense we witness the misnomer of the ‘stillness’ in the photograph and given pause to consider the banal yet sublime relationship we create with our own constructed urban environments.

The Regents Canal as a constructed landscape demonstrates how competing concepts of industrial, political, economic, social and environmental issues are not without varying consequences or ongoing challenges. However it is our personal and collective relationship to these places that determine their worth.

Mysteria Lucis: Unraveling the Mysteries of Light

Mysteria Lucis is a work inspired by the light we perceive in nature from sunrise to sunset. It portrays my attempt to capture the mystery and beauty of soft, colorful and alluring lights that grab our attention and take us into a zone of contemplation. It aims tell those stories we keep in crevices of our hearts – unspoken yet gently remind us of our dreams, old memories, aspirations, and longing to embrace the largeness of life.

Kris Ancog is a Wellington-based artist who calls himself a “Creative Soul” – an artist born with an insatiable sense of wonder who never ceases to explore beauty that bring us into an experience of joy, peace and serenity. He uses the technique of building multiple layers of paints on big canvases whilst incorporating textures to gradually reveal the world he wants to create. He is currently finishing his Diploma of Art and Creativity at The Learning Connexion International Art School. Mysteria Lucis is his second solo exhibition.
