No to stinky, bad tasting water
The recent case of smelly and bad tasting water in West Auckland highlights the need for households to protect themselves from poor quality water.
“People don’t need to put up with stinky, foul tasting water,” says Bruce Gordon, the CEO of West Auckland-based company HRV who is a leader in whole home water filtration.
“Residents and households need to have their own protection in place at home to filter their own water.”
This week many West Auckland residents complained of smelly and “earthy” tasting water as a result of algal bloom developing in a water storage dam in the Waitakere ranges.
Gordon, who over the last year has also challenged the Government to establish higher water filtration standards, says rather than relying on council to monitor water quality levels there are water filtration options that households can use to ensure their water is healthy and safe.
Late last year residents in the central North Island town of Raetihi found not even boiling water was enough to make it safe to drink when a large quantity of diesel leaked into the town’s water supply.
The HRV Water system uses a four stage filtering process and provides filtration to all household taps which means the water you drink and bathe in is free from contaminants. It includes a granular activated carbon (GAC) filter which is the most effective means of removing taste and odour from water such as that caused by algal bloom.
The system also filters out other water born nasties which, according to the Ministry of Health’s annual report on drinking-water quality from last year, can include chemicals and bacteria such as E. Coli and traces of faeces.
“We don't usually stop and think about the quality of the water we use every day but we really should.
“And I'm sure water providers are doing their best to rid polluted supplies of the various high risk contaminants. But they often lack the funds to properly filter out the chemicals and impurities in the treatment process which can then create health issues.”
