Why has Anadarko stopped its seismic surveying within the Pegasus Basin?

The vessel contracted by Texan oil giant Anadarko to undertake seismic surveying in the Pegasus Basin has ceased its surveying much earlier than expected. The MV Duke arrived in Wellington's port on Sunday evening after an absence of only two weeks. This is not long enough for it to have surveyed the 4,000 km of seabed required by Anadarko's Government permit.

"Oil exploration is a national issue and Anadarko should tell the people of Aotearoa what has happened. If they've made a mistake, or are changing their plans, everyone has a right to know" says Oil Free Wellington spokesperson Fi Gibson.

The ship's unexpected return to Wellington comes one day after the public announcement that a sailing expedition vessel, the Infinity, intended to intercept the MV Duke within the Pegasus Basin.

"It is becoming increasingly clear that fossil fuel companies are not welcome here. Not if they want to make a profit by putting our coastlines, communities, wild-life, and climate, at risk."

The last time the MV Duke was in Wellington's port a banner was attached to the side of the boat and hundreds of Wellingtonians marched on Anadarko's office giving them a clear ultimatum: Leave now, or Expect Resistance.
