Members of the public wishing to enter a submission on the naming proposals for Hohi, Stokes Beach, Norman Creek and Codfish Island / Whenua Hou now have fewer than two weeks left to do so, with public consultation set to close on February 14.

The New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa opened public consultation on the proposals – to assign new, or to alter existing, geographic names around the country – on 14 November 2013.

The proposals are:

• Hohi: proposal to adopt the traditional Māori name for an unnamed feature at the historic locality of the first mission station at Rangihoua Bay, in the Bay of Islands;

• Stokes Beach: proposal to name an unnamed beach within Tauranga Harbour, located on the northern shores of the suburb of Otumoetai and extending east from Tilby Point to the reclaimed part of Kulim Park;

• Norman Creek: proposal to name an unnamed creek that flows into Lake Wanaka, opposite Ruby Island;

• Codfish Island / Whenua Hou: proposal to alter an island referred to on maps and charts variously as ‘Codfish Island (Whenuahou)’, ‘Codfish (Whenuahau) Island’, ‘Codfish Island’, ‘Whenua hōu’, ‘Codfish Island / Whenuahou’, and ‘Codfish Island / Whenua Hou’.

Consultation on these proposals closes on 14 February 2014. Any member of the public can make a submission either supporting or objecting to these proposals. Submissions can be made in writing to the Secretary for the New Zealand Geographic Board, via the online forms, or to nzgbsubmissions@linz.govt.nz.
