Public to vote on Major Cycleways route names
Public voting opens tomorrow on finalists to be considered as route names for Christchurch’s Major Cycleways.
“We asked the public to suggest names for the routes and had a great response with more than 220 entries received,” says Councillor Phil Clearwater, Chairman of Christchurch City Council’s Environment Committee.
“These have now been narrowed down to finalists for each route and now we want the public’s help again, this time to determine which of the options will go before Council for a final decision.”
Mr Clearwater said there were some very creative suggestions and many entrants had done research and spent time contemplating their names.
“Many of the entries include cultural references or note the history of areas the routes pass through and the list of finalists makes for interesting reading.”
The finalists are listed on the Future Christchurch website and Mr Clearwater is encouraging people to have a look and cast their vote. “February is Bike Wise month and while people’s thoughts are tuned in to cycling it is a great time to contribute to the naming of our new cycleways.”
Full instructions on how to vote are on the website, www.futurechristchurch.co.nz
Voting opens on Saturday 1 February and closes on Saturday 15 February.
Once voting closes, results will be collated and a recommendation made to the Council on which name should be adopted for each route.
