On 3 February harvesting work will commence at a forestry block at the north end of the East Belt beside the Ashley River, at the Ashley Rakahuri Regional Park.

This block was devastated by the recent wind storm resulting in trees falling across mountain bike and walking tracks.

The public will be excluded from this area while harvesting takes place, which is likely to be completed on 16 February.

The Rail Bridge car park will still be open but logging trucks will be using the shingle road leading to it.

The public may re-enter the area after harvesting is complete, but the tracks will not be useable until repaired.

Background information: Ashley Rakahuri Regional Park

The Ashley Rakahuri Regional Park opened on 14th October 2012.

The Regional Park extends up both sides of the Ashley/Rakahuri River from the Ashley Estuary to the confluence with the Okuku River, 9km west of Rangiora.

It was developed on Environment Canterbury land to meet the community’s desire to have the river and berm land better managed and more widely available for people to enjoy.

Activities available at the Park include walking, mountain biking, swimming, kayaking, fishing, picnicking and bird-watching.
