The Nappy Lady Issues New Parents A Challenge
With life becoming so driven by consumerism and the ever-increasing number of disposable products we are encouraged to
use these days, having a baby is becoming incredibly expensive on the pocket and the planet.
‘Over the past 9 years since I had my son, the number of new disposable products available to new parents is amazing!’
Says the Nappy Lady Kate Meads. ‘It is also scary to think there are so many more new convenience products that are
going into landfill after a single use.’
Because of this Kate has updated her workshops for 2014 to include lots of new information about how parents can reduce
waste in the home and save loads of money with very little time or effort involved.
‘There are some really exciting, low cost modern alternatives to one use items available nowadays, but many people don’t
know about them,’ says Kate. ‘This year I have teamed up with some exciting partners to be able to show these fantastic
reusable innovations.’
Teaching parents about the modern versions of re-usable nappies, and dispelling all of the silly myths about using cloth
nappies are still the main focuses of The Nappy Lady’s workshop and the free nappies that parents get when they attend
is quite the motivator.
There are limited spaces at each workshop and the parents who attend will go home with a trial pack of modern cloth
nappies. The value of the packs vary from region to region and can be worth up to $170 in some places. The trial packs
offer a great opportunity for new parents to have a go at being sustainable with their nappy choices with very little
cost.
This year Kate is challenging parents who attend the workshops to commit to using 1 cloth nappy every day on their baby.
There is a pledge page on the nappy lady website (http://www.thenappylady.co.nz/nappypledge.html) where anyone who wants to commit can make their pledge.
‘My goal for this year is to get parents to pledge to use at least 1 reusable nappy every day. Because if every baby in
nappies in New Zealand used just 1 cloth nappy each day this would prevent around 1 million disposable nappies from
entering our landfills every single week.’ explains Kate
‘It is not hard, we don’t all have to be environmental saints, we all just need to do a little bit and that is better
than doing nothing!’
