Removal of last chemical toilet disposal tank in Christchurch
Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel has today welcomed the removal of the final plastic chemical toilet disposal tank from
Christchurch City.
Christchurch City Council contractors today removed the last chemical toilet disposal tank, located in Mersey Street, St
Albans.
Following the earthquakes of 2011, the Council ensured all Christchurch residents had reliable access to a functional
sewage disposal where sewerage infrastructure was not connected. Around 35,000 chemical toilets were distributed and 587
chemical toilet disposal tanks were installed throughout the city.
“Removing the last of these storage tanks is a milestone for the rebuild of Christchurch, marking the progress with the
ongoing work towards the repair of all services and infrastructure for the residents of Christchurch.
“The continued presence of the storage tanks served as a constant reminder of what we had been through. I am glad to see
them go and I hope we never need to call on them again,” Mayor Dalziel says.
Lianne Dalziel said work on the horizontal infrastructure was progressing well, with 321 projects totalling $240.4
million having been completed.
"But there is still a lot to do. The road works can be frustrating but they're a sign we're getting work done and we
call for your patience while we rebuild,” Mayor Dalziel says.
