If it’s all kite, it’s all right – Streets Kite Day returns to New Brighton Beach on Saturday 25 January, filling the sky with kites of all shapes, sizes and colours and reaffirming its status as one of Christchurch’s favourite family events.
Paul Kean, Christchurch City Council Events Business Coordinator, says up to 6000 people flock to the beach to watch and take part each year.
“It’s one of those genuinely family-friendly occasions on the SummerTimes events calendar, with a broad, all-ages appeal,” he says.
“Everyone’s welcome to bring and fly their own kite – in fact, kite enthusiasts have been known to travel from around New Zealand and the world to take part. If flying’s not your thing, simply bring a rug and picnic and watch the spectacle. If you spend one day at the beach this summer, Streets Kite Day is a pretty good pick.”
Kites will be available on the day from the Kite Shop.
The event coincides with the Ryan Security Buskers at Brighton celebration – part of the SCIRT World Buskers Festival, the day will see performances from Cirque No Problem, Reuben DotDotDot, Cate Great!, Ruby Rubberlegs, Box of Tricks, Derek Derek and Pancho Libre take place at the New Brighton Basketball Court, just next to the Pier.
