Giant #GigatownWanaka pylon gets people talking
Wanaka locals and visitors alike have been talking about an impressive #GigatownWanaka stunt on a major landmark today.
A 15 metre-high, 4.5m-wide (at the base) bright orange inflatable pylon, or “gigacone" was erected on the top of Mt Iron for one hour this morning by #GigatownWanaka organising committee members.
The giant pylon has been specially made to feature in the #GigatownWanaka Jet Racing event at Warbirds Over Wanaka but it was erected to signify the start of Challenge Wanaka this weekend.
As thousands of visitors flock to Wanaka for the event, the #GigatownWanaka crew want to get people using social media to spread the #GigatownWanaka message.
"With many people in town this weekend, we wanted to create a sub-event and a point of chatter for the Gigatown competition – about the Wanaka community coming together again for a community event,” organiser Pete Marshall says.
“This giant pylon certainly provides a talking point for the town – and we hope that people talk about it more on social media to spread the #GigatownWanaka message."
A second pylon will be made for the Warbirds event. The pylons are filled with air and pegged and tethered to the ground.
“These #GigatownWanaka pylons are going to pop up in all sorts of crazy places over the coming months,” Marshall says.
Wanaka is currently leading Chorus’s Gigatown competition, with 744,801 points today.
