Auckland welcomes new air alliance
Auckland Tourism, Events and Economic Development (ATEED) supports the proposed alliance between Air New Zealand and Singapore Airlines and its commitment to significantly expand services on the Auckland to Singapore route.
Singapore Airlines plans to progressively increase flights to Auckland adding 100,000 seats in the first year and introducing an A380 daily service.
ATEED Manager Tourism Jason Hill says this is excellent news for Auckland’s tourism sector and will help to open up access to the South East Asian markets as well as provide more seats through connecting routes into high-yielding European markets.
“South East Asia provides strong growth opportunities and the new services via Singapore will help to connect Auckland with the emerging markets of India and Indonesia. It’s heartening to see these two major airlines and Auckland Airport working in a cohesive way to grow air connectivity,” says Mr Hill.
The announcement will support ATEED’s work to grow the international visitor economy in line with the targets in the 10-year Auckland Visitor Plan. ATEED – on behalf of Auckland Council – aims to double the contribution from the visitor economy, growing it to $6 billion by 2021.
A focus of the Auckland Visitor Plan is to support the growth of sustainable air connectivity, which aligns with the New Zealand Tourism Industry Association’s Tourism 2025 Strategy.
