Outdoor Movies are a Summerdaze Highlight

Imagine following Ed Hillary’s progress as he climbs Mount Everest, while you sit spellbound under the starlit sky with the Remarkables as your backdrop. It’s the next best thing to being there, and you can experience the thrill by coming along to the TomTom Outdoor Cinema showing of “Beyond the Edge” on Saturday 25 January.

Outdoor movies have always been a highlight of the Summerdaze Festival, and QLDC Arts & Events Facilitator Jan Maxwell says several hundred people can be expected at each screening.

“What better way to put yourself in the footsteps of New Zealand’s most famous mountaineer than by watching this acclaimed documentary in the midst of our spectacular mountains,” Jan says.

“Bring your mates, bring your rugs, beanbags and a picnic supper, and enjoy the experience.”

The first movie on the programme is the Australian film “The Sapphires”, a PG13-rated drama about four talented young Aboriginal girls who learn about love, friendship and war when their all-girl group entertains US troops in Vietnam. “The Sapphires” screens on Friday 24 January.

“Beyond the Edge” is a docudrama blending historic footage of Hillary’s conquest of Everest with dramatized reconstructions.

Weather permitting, both screenings will begin at dark – about 9.45pm – at the Red Barn in the Remarkables Park Town Centre, Frankton. The cost is $5 per person.
