Join Urban Visionaries of Auckland in Silo Park

Join Urban Visionaries of Auckland in Silo Park at Pecha Kucha

Auckland’s Pecha Kucha Night and Silo Park are hosting a special evening on urban design and future of Auckland to inspire, motivate and educate fellow Aucklanders. The event is free to the public and will take place on Auckland’s waterfront in Silo Park on Friday, 17th January 2014.

World-wide phenomenon, Pecha Kucha will host a vibrant line-up of prominent, local presenters to discuss and question some of the important topics of Auckland; from great design, user-friendly transport options to our local volcano geography and the future of sustainability.

Drawing upon the central theme of the evening, everyone’s favourite outdoor cinema in Silo Park will come alive after Pecha Kucha; Silo Cinema presents “The Human Scale”, offering a critical view on the way we build and use our cities. Alongside regular Silo Markets and other events, Silo Park will continue to host the largest, free outdoor cinema each week over summer on a Friday evening.

Brilliant pop maestro of local territory, Lawrence Arabia will warm up the ears of Silo Park with a DJ set prior to the evening’s events.

Pecha Kucha (which is Japanese for the sound of conversation) brings prominent and emerging creative minds together for an evening of lightning-fast presentations, networking and fun. The Pecha Kucha format, where presenters are given 20 slides, each shown for 20 seconds to reveal their passions, work and inspirations, is now held in over 600 cities around the world. Auckland events are among the most popular, with over 250 people in attendance at each event.

Pecha Kucha organiser and curator, Luka Hinse says, "Thanks to Waterfront Auckland and Silo Park, we are really looking forward to sharing Pecha Kucha in a great environment. This collaboration of Pecha Kucha and Silo Cinema will set a scene where local specialists can share their thoughts on the global topic of urbanisation and speak out in front of a broader public.”
“Presenters come from different backgrounds but will all relate their talks to the topic of the movie. This way we expect to have global input in form of the documentary "The Human Scale" and a local interpretation where speakers relate this to what is happening in our city".

Luka Hinse has selected a fine mix of six local presenters with an Auckland flavour and in theme with Silo Cinema for the night.

The Pecha Kucha speakers are as follows:

Dr Stephen Rainbow, General Manager of Strategy at Waterfront will discuss about great design, sustainability and commercial development in the precinct.

Food Forest NZ’s James Samuel presents options for growing urban food in our city.

Project Director Sky Path Bevan Woodward shares his plans to transform Auckland into a cycle-friendly, walkable city.

Transport planner and Green MP Julie Anne Genter presents new ideas on how to improve the user-friendliness of Auckland

Ecologist and photographer Alastair Jamieson shows amazing photography from the volcanoes in our backyard which make Auckland such a special city.
