Survey reveals Kiwi demand for fast broadband and more data
More than forty per cent of Kiwis are looking to upgrade to a faster broadband technology such as UFB or VDSL, a new
survey reveals.
And, they want more data, with forty per cent of Kiwi households expecting to use more internet data in 2014. This is
driven by additional devices connecting to the web, with almost a third of respondents saying they will have more
devices connected to the web.
The independent survey of 1,000 homes, commissioned by ISP Orcon, shows Kiwis love affair with the internet continues.
The survey reveals New Zealand households have an average of five devices that connect to the internet.
Asked if they are considering upgrading their internet to a faster technology such as VDSL or UFB in 2014, 41 per cent
said they were, with a further 15 per cent saying they have recently upgraded.
Orcon today announced it is launching two VDSL plans. VDSL technology offers far superior download and upload speeds –
and is available to around 85 per cent of metropolitan households.
Orcon CEO Greg McAlister says Orcon’s VDSL broadband plans are ideal for the demanding internet user.
“With New Zealand households using more data, and connecting more devices to the internet, it’s vital that they have a
fast connection. And with a fast connection, a decent data cap is essential. We think our VDSL plans, in particular the
uncapped plan, will appeal to families, flatters, and anyone who demands plenty of data, fast.”
The new VDSL plans are $99/mth for 80GB and $119/mth for unlimited broadband. The plans include modem rental and a home
phone line.
Survey results
• 39% of Kiwi households expect their data use to increase in the next 12 months and 58% expect it to stay the
same
• 31% of Kiwi households expect the number of internet devices in their home to increase and 66% expect it to
stay the same
• 41% of Kiwi households have considered upgrading to faster internet and 15% have already upgraded
