Thieves’ Alley Market Day A Big Drawcard
The 2014 Dunedin Thieves’ Alley Market Day is so popular organisers have had to close stall registrations.
More than 350 stallholders from throughout New Zealand have registered for next month’s Market Day in the city centre.
Dunedin City Council Community Events Co-ordinator Marilyn Anderson says unfortunately there is not enough room to
accommodate any more stalls. The same situation arose last year when interest from stallholders outnumbered places
available.
“The level of interest shows what a successful event the Market Day is and it means there will be a fantastic variety of
things to see and buy.
“This is not just a market – there will be plenty of entertainment too. We urge people to wander around and experience
the diverse sights and sounds on offer. The scents drifting in the air will lift your spirits and inspire smiles!”
The Thieves’ Alley Market Day will be held on Saturday, 8 February from 10am to 4pm in the Octagon and surrounding
streets.
There will be more than 50 different foods to try, ranging from fresh fruit and vegetables to Evansdale cheese and
French macaroons, as well as Pacific treats and a variety of Asian fare.
Items to buy will range from those produced by talented home craftspeople to artists’ wares. Stunning examples of
woodwork and sculpture will be on offer, such as ponga totems and wooden furniture. As well as a wide range of
jewellery, many glass and sterling silver handmade works will also feature.
Bath Street, which is always packed with eager shoppers and browsers for this annual event, will have a rest area
halfway where people can sit and catch their breath.
Ms Anderson says the Market Day promotes a good community spirit and fosters local talent.
