State La Grande Swim returns to Akaroa in February
The State La Grande Swim is returning to Akaroa in February for a third year after the event attracted 800 entries last
year.
Part of the national Ocean Swim series, it is Christchurch’s largest open water swimming event, with four races to suit
all ages and abilities.
The State La Grande Swim starts on Saturday 22 February 2014 at high tide off Akaroa’s French Bay Beach with a 2.8
kilometre race, followed by a 1000 metre swim. A 300 metre course follows and the series ends with the 200 metre State
OceanKids event. All entrants get a free swim cap, beach towel, certificate and goodies bag.
To help people get in shape for the big day, the Christchurch City Council has been running ‘Track My Swim’ at the
Jellie Park, Graham Condon and Pioneer Recreation and Sport Centre pools.
This free training programme allows State La Grande Swim entrants to enrol at one of the pools and start counting the
laps they swim. Staff log the laps and when entrants reach target distances they go into a draw to win prizes.
Track My Swim is free and has been under way at Council pools since mid-December 2013. It ends on Sunday 9 February 2014
and winners will be drawn on Tuesday 11 February 2014.
