Cheer road cyclists at the top of their game
Some of the biggest names in cycling are high-tailing it to Christchurch for the Calder Stewart Elite Road National Championships, running from Friday 10 – Sunday 12 January 2014.
Christchurch City Council Recreation and Sports Unit Manager John Filsell says that Christchurch has hosted the Championships, New Zealand’s premier road cycling event, since 2010.
“The Elites strike a nice balance between a fun party atmosphere and the excitement of seeing athletes performing at the top of their game. Many of New Zealand’s top road cyclists, including Hayden Roulston, Jack Bauer, Michael Vink, Courteney Lowe and Reta Trotman, are flocking to the Garden City in the hunt for the national jersey,” Mr Filsell says.
“That said, cyclists of all skill levels are invited to compete. The event comprises road cycling and time trial events for men, women, and those in the under-23 age group, including a recreational ride.”
Traditionally, the event attracts up to 15,000 spectators, many in costume, who line local streets to watch the competition.
