Archaeology for kids at Kerikeri
Looking for a mid-summer holiday activity for the kids?
The NZ Historic Places Trust is organising a live archaeological experience at Quince’s Landing – a 10 minute drive from Kerikeri – on January 14 (12 noon -2.30pm approx) followed by a brief tour of the nearby Edmond’s Ruins.
Te Ika Hari Raumati [Happy Summer Fishing] will use an existing archaeological stone fish trap in Wharau Road on the Kerikeri Inlet where NZHPT staff will demonstrate how Maori in the area used the trap to catch fish.
And while participants are waiting for fish to swim into the stone enclosure, they’ll also be able to learn some other traditional skills like making a knife out of obsidian to cut and scale the fish, and cooking with an open fire.
“We had a great turnout from people when we organized a similar event last year. This is a really good opportunity for young people in particular to engage with archaeology and Maori heritage in a fun, hands-on way,” says the NZHPT’s Northland Maori Heritage Adviser, Atareiria Heihei.
“We’ll be carefully using an existing stone fish trap – which we believe is well over 150 years old – to show people how they worked, while also giving them a taste of this particular aspect of Maori heritage.”
Those taking part will learn how the fish trap was constructed, how it works and (hopefully) how effective it is in catching fish.
“Last year, we caught a good number of fish using it – and this time round we’ll be looking to repeat that result,” says Atareiria.
Participants will be limited to 30, and children taking part will need to be accompanied by an adult. Old clothes, suitable shoes (rock hoppers or gumboots) and sunscreen will be needed on the day.
“We’re looking to start at 12 noon on January 14 and end – hopefully with a tasty fish snack – at about 2.30pm. People will then be able to walk across to nearby Edmond’s Ruins where we’ll be running a guided tour,” says Atareiria.
The event is free, though bookings are essential – to book contact the NZHPT’s Northland office on Ph 09-407-0473 or email bjamieson@historic.org.nz
