Get in to the Gigatown competition- it’s not too late
DECEMBER 23, 2013.
Mayor Ross Church has issued an invitation to all Kāpiti residents to “get into the Gigatown competition” and help put
Kāpiti in the driving seat of the new digital age.
The competition is being run by the ultra fast broadband installer Chorus right across New Zealand with the top prize
going to the community that generates the most social media traffic.
“The prize is huge,” says Mayor Church. “Chorus will provide access to a gigabit of internet connection for three years
at the standard broad band price.
“This is 100 times faster than what will be available anywhere else in the country – not only would this provide
real-time downloading of videos and games, but it would also open up Kāpiti as the place for digital innovation and
business.”
The competition is underway and runs through to September 2014 when the five top areas will be named for a run-off.
Towns all over the country are taking part and the competition is fierce.
Mayor Church said it was not too late for Kāpiti to get on board. “Lets show the same determination that got Sir Edmund
Hillary to the top and Sir Peter Blake to the finish line. Neither gave up when the challenge looked formidable! Kāpiti
is a great community and this is an opportunity to let the rest of the country know it.”
Councillor Gavin Welsh, Chair of Council’s Corporate Business Committee, said early access to such internet speed would
put Kāpiti “on the map. It would be a huge boost to residents, to the way our kids learn, to local business, to
employment, and to the way we share information.
“Winning this competition would give us a huge advantage over other towns as we shift into the digital world, but this
competition is more than just about winning, it’s about establishing connections and using modern technology to remain
in touch.”
