New glass recycling service for Havelock North

A new glass recycling container has been placed at the Martin Place recycling depot in Havelock North.

The container is identical to the one that was installed in the Waimarama Domain last week and will allow users to split their recycling into brown, green and clear glass.

Hastings District Council Waste Minimisation Officer Dominic Salmon says “The amount of glass recycled at Martin Place traditionally increases by 60% over the festive season and this new, purpose designed 20 foot container will allow the operation to be more efficient by reducing the number of truck movements required to cater for this increase in demand.”

Dominic Salmon says “The other recycling facilities at Martin Place are also well used but we are concerned at the amount of material that is just dumped next to the containers when they are full. The recycling bins are emptied on a regular basis and while Council actively encourages recycling, it is not acceptable that it is just dumped next to the bins when they are full.”

“The recycling bins located at Waimarama, Martin Place and in our rural communities of Tutira and Maraekakaho are serviced regularly but there are times when they can overflow due to increased demand. We ask that residents bring their recycling back at another time as to dump it on the ground next to the bin is considered littering and Council will issue an infringement notice in cases where this practice can be proven,” Mr Salmon says.

“The best way to get the most from the recycling bins is to take a little time and reshape your recycling. Squashing cardboard boxes, tin cans and plastic bottles ensures more material will go into each bin.”

Dominic Salmon says “The Christmas and New Year holidays result in an increased amount of recycling and it is important that the community takes responsibility by using the facilities correctly and keeping the surrounding area tidy.”

Hastings residents are encouraged to use their weekly kerbside recycling and rubbish collections which will run as per normal over the festive period.
