In a 4to8km radius from Wellington city centre there is amble public transport everywhere. Still the council insists that any building needs a car park for every unit.
Let me question this wisdom as a growing number of citizens reject cars for the advantages of using cycles, walk or take public transport.
Reducing this rule to no need for a carpark at all or one car park for every three or four units will reduce building and compliance cost as well as open up a large number of potential inner city building sites currently unfeasible.
You might look into it a bit more as the idea dovetails with the Housing Accord, affordability of building and potential special housing areas. Changing this existing regulation will reduce cost, bring more people to the inner city, help development where it is wanted and continue our development towards a greener Wellington.
The cars will be parked everywhere you might argue! Enforce control in the inner city until 11 pm and more and more people will self select. A car is expensive as it is and the choice of being close to the inner city and using a Taxi on occasions or a rental car will more than pay for itself.
