Grandmother-Granddaughter Duo are Double Winners

Grandmother-Granddaughter Duo are Double Winners at ‘12 Hours of Christmas’ Event

The Palms' annual 12 hours of Christmas event saw the centre host its third busiest day of the year yet, as close to 23,000 people came through the doors on Thursday 5 December.

In its fifth year, The Palms’ 12 hours of Christmas provided discounts and hourly prize giveaways to shoppers over the course of the centre’s opening hours, from 9:00am – 9:00pm.

In a Christmas miracle of its own accord, this year’s event managed to turn one Canterbury family’s shopping trip into one they’ll always remember.

Megan McKay, along with her sister Emma, mother Sharon and grandmother Rona, made a family trip to The Palms, especially for the annual event. With the goal of getting an early start on the Christmas shopping, the family never imagined that both Megan and grandmother Rona would be the recipients of two of the day’s biggest and most sought-after prizes – a $1,000 gift card from The Palms.

The family regularly shops at The Palms and entered the draw multiple times in the hopes of winning big, deciding from the outset that they would split the prize money should they be lucky enough to win.

“Emma and I decided that we would enter the competition together and if either of us won, then we would split the $1,000 prize. We’re stoked we won! It’s a great prize and in perfect time for buying Christmas presents. It’s great that Grandma won a big prize too – we’ll definitely be going on a few more shopping trips as a family in the near future,” says Megan.

The day’s third major prize winner, Megan Arnold, also took the family to The Palms especially for the 12 hours event. Hearing about it on the radio, she thought it would be a great day to get a start on the Christmas shopping, and ended up sending her husband home early so that she could continue to shop.

“My husband actually took the kids home early because I wanted to stay and try and win the major prize. I was pretty excited and almost in a state of shock when they said that I had won! I’ve never won anything of this size before so I am very happy.”

Mrs. Arnold is looking forward to buying some practical household items, such as bed sheets for her two young girls, but will also be sure to treat herself and her husband to something a little more luxurious.

The Palms’ Centre Manager Simon Carter says that this year’s event was one of the best yet, and loves seeing Cantabrians getting into the Christmas spirit – not to mention a bit competitive!

“It was amazing to see so many people taking part in this popular annual event. It really is a great event for the whole community, and we had some fantastic deals on offer at what can be an expensive time of year for families.

“There were several people entering multiple times and I got to see some of that competitive Cantabrian spirit shine. It’s an annual affair at The Palms’ and I’m looking forward to seeing the winners back at the centre in the coming months to enjoy their gift cards.”
