Council appoints Chief Financial Officer

Christchurch City Council has appointed Peter Gudsell to the new position of Chief Financial Officer (CFO).

Acting Chief Executive Jane Parfitt says this is a crucial role for the Council as it looks to address the financial challenges of the rebuild.

“Peter is well positioned to step into this role because of his experience in both the commercial sector and Treasury.

“The role of the CFO is a new one for the Council and it signals the priority the organisation is putting on addressing financial challenges posed by the rebuild. While all of the Council’s Executive Leadership Team will be tasked with ensuring financial sustainability and savings, the CFO will specifically be expected to take the lead on identifying and driving savings to provide the fiscal headroom for investment in the rebuild and recovery of Christchurch.

“Peter brings impressive credentials to the position and we look forward to him starting here on 3 March 2014.”

The CFO’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
• Insurance
• Treasury
• Crown/Council cost-sharing agreement
• Financial sustainability and savings
• Annual and Long Term Plans
• Business performance
• Commercial investment attraction advice.

Mr Gudsell has been involved in finance leadership roles for large, complex companies for around 15 years. He comes to the Council from a senior position at Telecom New Zealand, as Head of Finance – Planning Performance Management, after five years in that role.

His previous experience covers various roles at Telecom New Zealand and Vodafone New Zealand as well as roles in Treasury throughout the 1990s.

Mr Gudsell says, “I feel both excited and humbled to be given the opportunity to perform such a crucial role in the rebuild and recovery of Christchurch. I find it hard to imagine any other finance role in New Zealand right now that is as important. On a personal level I’m thrilled to be bringing my family to Christchurch and look forward to rediscovering the city and surrounding areas.”
