HUTT CITY COUNCIL NEWS RELEASE
11 DECEMBER 2013
No exceptions for Council where environment is concerned
A recent case in the Environment Court has proved that Hutt City Council makes ‘no exceptions’ when it comes to protecting our environment.
The case, which the Council won, saw a local business operator convicted and discharged and his company fined $30,000 for nine non-compliance offences brought before the court. This is the second time that this operator has been successfully prosecuted by the council.
Resource consents are required by businesses and organisations using any resource e.g. land or water as part of their work; they ensure people are treating the environment well and set conditions that must be complied with.
“Hutt City Council is committed to minimising the environmental impacts of activities in Hutt City and while most resource consents we grant are compliant, we take serious action against those who choose to flout the law” says Helen Oram, Environmental Consents Manager at Hutt City Council.
“We actively monitor all resource consents and while we’re cooperative and fair, if our assessment identifies issues then we will take action. We take no exceptions when it comes to protecting the environment, which is part of our legal obligation”.
Information on obtaining resource consent can be found at hutt.city.govt.nz/resource-consents
