Auckland Passport – on sale now
People can experience the best of Auckland’s heritage at a special rate this summer.
The Historic Auckland Passport – a concession ticket that gives reduced entry to the NZ Historic Places Trust’s three main properties in Auckland – is on sale now at Highwic, Alberton and Ewelme Cottage.
“People can enjoy the colonial splendour of Alberton, the lavish wealth of Highwic and the charm of Ewelme Cottage for just $18 per adult, with children at school free. That’s tremendous value,” says the NZHPT’s Northern Heritage Destinations Manager Natalie McCondach.
“The Passport provides Aucklanders and visitors from out of town with an opportunity to explore some of the city’s most authentic heritage places at a family-friendly price while having fun learning about Auckland’s colourful past. The Passport is also valid for 12 months from date of issue.”
All three properties are within walking distance of train stations or a bus route, and all offer beautiful gardens for visitors to enjoy.
“Summer is a great time to enjoy our gardens, which are looking really great, and are wonderful attractions in their own right,” says Natalie.
“Highwic, for example, has a range of garden activities and games like croquet and quoits which are family-friendly and a lot of fun for everyone.”
Two of the properties have had significant conservation work carried out in recent months.
“Earlier this year, Highwic was repainted in its original colour scheme – a striking blend of fawns and beiges, with a splash of white highlighting some of the architectural trimmings,” says Natalie.
“Other work has included re-slating the roof of the original part of the building with genuine Welsh slate and redecorating much of the interior of the building following what we believe was the original colour scheme. It’s now looking absolutely stunning.”
Alberton has also undergone some restoration, including work on its iconic external staircase.
“The Auckland Passport is a great way for people to catch up with the changes at both places,” she says.
The Historic Auckland Passport costs $18 per adult, with admission for school children free of charge. Full membership of the NZHPT, which starts from as little as $45, offers free or discounted entry to all NZHPT properties throughout New Zealand and to hundreds of overseas historic places as well.
