Final Name In Central Otago Set Approved
The New Zealand Geographic Board (NZGB) Ngā Pou Taunaha o Aotearoa today announced that it has approved as official the
name ‘Te Kārearea Peak’ for a currently unnamed feature in an alpine region of Central Otago.
Proposed by the Central Otago District Council, the name ‘Te Kārearea Peak’ is one of an agreed set of four names proposed by the Council and Ngāi Tahu.
“Of that set only ‘Te Kārearea Peak’ received no objecting and only supporting, submissions – meaning that it fell to
the NZGB to make the final determination,” says NZGB Chair Dr Don Grant.
“As such, acting under the Board’s delegation, I have approved ‘Te Kārearea Peak’ to be assigned as the official name of
a currently unnamed peak, 2252 metres high and south east of The Remarkables.”
The remaining three names in the set – ‘Lake Te Kōhua’, ‘Mount Tūwhakarōria’ and ‘Tapuae-o-Uenuku / Hector Mountains’ – received both supporting and objecting submissions.
“The NZGB did not uphold any of the objections and, so, it was Land Information Minister Maurice Williamson who made the
final decisions – announcing today that he has upheld the NZGB’s recommendations to assign these names as official.
“Following the Minister’s announcement, I am pleased to be able to say that all four of the Council’s and Ngāi Tahu’s
agreed names will become official.”
