Titan arum in last
stages of blooming
The Auckland
Domain Wintergarden’s Amorphophallus titanum (titan
arum or corpse flower) is in the last stages of
blooming.
An estimated 10,000 people visited the Wintergarden yesterday, patiently queuing to walk past the plant in the tropical glasshouse and take photographs.
The doors opened to a small queue at 6.30am and gates closed at 7.30pm, allowing the last visitors to see the plant at 9.15pm.
Today, the plant is starting to wither. The frill on the spathe (the burgundy outer part of the bloom) is drooping. The central spadix will slowly collapse. Today is likely to be the last day to view the flower.
The titan arum’s signature rotting flesh odour has been faintly detectable throughout the flowering.
