Many Kiwis unprepared for the summer sizzle

Over 40 per cent of New Zealanders have been caught short and run out of gas while barbequing in the past five years, according to research by TNS New Zealand.

The survey conducted for Contact Rockgas also reveals that a quarter of Kiwis are also repeat offenders with their gas cylinders embarrassingly running out more than once.

Meanwhile, women appear more optimistic about the number of barbeques they expect to have this summer with around half expecting to have 10 or more compared to just a third of men.

Shaun Jones, Contact Rockgas spokesman, said:  “With our research showing only 60 per cent of us check our gas bottles before firing up the BBQ, and the average cost of BBQ catering at $40, Kiwis are putting a lot at risk by not checking they have enough gas to cook their BBQ.”

The research into Kiwi barbequing habits also suggests young New Zealanders were the worst culprits when it came to checking their gas cylinders were full before sparking up the BBQ, said Mr Jones.

“Almost half of those who indicated they’ve run out of gas mid-BBQ were aged between 18-29 years old compared with only a third of those over 50 years of age.

“We reckon it’s about time someone helped Kiwis get properly ready for summer BBQ season, so they’re not left holding a raw snag. Hosting a BBQ with friends and family is a ceremonial summer event for many and we want to help Kiwis get ready for their first of the season by Ignition Day, December 1. 

“We’re taking on the job of making sure Kiwis are comfortable behind their BBQ by helping them ensure their barbeque is safe and clean, that their cooking skills are supreme and that the process of filling their gas bottle with Contact Rockgas is a fun and easy one.”
